Women's Tennis Saturday Match Postponed, Heads To Asheville Sunday

Eagles currently leading the Big South standings with 4-0 record.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (10-4, 4-0 Big South Conference) heads on the road Sunday to take on UNC Asheville (8-5, 1-1 Big South Conference) at 1 p.m. The Eagles were originally scheduled to host Campbell in a Big South clash on Sat., Mar. 24 at 10 a.m. That match has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast and will be played at Rock Hill Tennis Center on Mon., Mar. 26 at a time to be determined.

EAGLE HIGHLIGHTS
-Keep an eye on the doubles point – Winthrop has won the doubles point 12 out of its 14 matches this season

-The Eagles posted back-to-back sweeps last week for the first time this season, recording 7-0 victories on the road at Big South opponents Longwood and Radford, and fell just short in a 4-3 loss to VCU.

-Megan Kauffman was named Big South Player of the Week this week for her performance against Longwood, Radford and VCU. Kauffman remains undefeated on the season in doubles, playing for the first time with Alisa Soloveva against Longwood, and improving to 12-0 on the season with usual partner Lauren Proctor with wins against Radford and VCU.  In singles play, Kauffman went 3-0 on the week, played up a court to No. 2 against Longwood and won in straight sets, and won a tough three-set victory against VCU to tie up the match at 3-3 and force a final-court decision. Kauffman's three-straight singles wins has improved her overall singles record to 7-6.

-No. 26 Lauren Proctor's 10-2 record (.833) at No. 1 singles is the best in the Big South Conference at the court one position, while sophomore Alisa Soloveva leads all players in the league with an 11-2 overall record (.846).

AN EYE ON THE OPPONENT
Asheville hosts Big South foe Longwood Friday before taking on the Eagles Sunday. The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Western Carolina.

Winthrop will stay on the road for another conference match-up with Liberty, Sat. Mar. 31 at 10 a.m.

PRESEASON FAVORITE
The Winthrop women's tennis team has been predicted to finish first in the Big South Conference by the league's coaches, receiving all but one of the first-place votes. This year's selection marks the 15th consecutive year Winthrop has been voted the preseason favorite by the coaches. Winthrop won the league title last season, the program's 19th conference championship overall.

HISTORIC NATIONAL RANKING
Winthrop women's tennis doubles pair Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor have re-entered the national rankings at No. 54 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Women's National Doubles Rankings released Tuesday afternoon. The duo is undefeated at 12-0 on the season at the court one doubles position.
 
Lauren Proctor is ranked No. 26 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Women's National Singles Rankings, a slight drop from her previous ranking of No. 23. Proctor reached a season-high ranking of No. 14. She is currently the only female singles student-athlete nationally ranked from the Big South Conference.  Proctor had a history-making fall season, winning the ITA Carolinas Regional title for the first time in program history.

Mark your calendars - Winthrop is hosting the Big South Conference Championship in men's and women's tennis April 16-21 at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. More information on match times and opponents/seeds will be available at a later date.
