Women's Tennis Opens Conference Play With 6-1 Win Over PC

Proctor/Kauffman undefeated at number one doubles position.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (5-2, 1-0 Big South) won its fifth consecutive match and first conference contest with a 6-1 win over Presbyterian College (4-6, 0-1 Big South) on a beautiful, sunny Tuesday afternoon at Rock Hill Tennis Center.

"It feels great to be 1-0 in the conference," said head coach Cid Carvalho. "I'm very proud of the way my girls played today; they fought hard for every point and we ended up with a good win over a good Presbyterian team."

The Eagles gained the early advantage with a sweep in doubles. Court one duo Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman improved their undefeated record to 6-0 with a 6-3 win. Alisa Soloveva and Tayla Van Eck continued their gutsy play of late, winning a 7-6 tiebreaker on court two to complete the sweep.

No. 20 Lauren Proctor finished first in singles play for the second-straight match with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory. She was followed shortly by Soloveva on court two and Alya Mourad would clinch the match for the Eagles with a decisive 6-0, 6-3 win on court six.

UP NEXT
The Eagles head to Atlanta for a non-conference match-up at Georgia State Sat., Mar. 3 at 10 a.m., the first of six-straight road matches.
