ROCK HILL, S.C. - In the first home match of the season, the Winthrop women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over visiting UNC Wilmington to improve to 2-2 overall. Due to forecasted inclement weather, the singles courts were played first followed by the doubles courts, instead of the traditional order.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead led by nationally ranked No. 14 junior Lauren Proctor with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 victory on court one, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win from sophomore Alisa Soloveva at the two position. Sophomore Alya Mourad stormed back from down 4-1 in the first set to claim a 6-4, 6-0 win on court six and a big advantage for the Eagles. The Seahawks kept it close, pulling out two tough matches on courts three and four, but junior Aida Kelic would clinch the match for Winthrop with a three-set victory on court five.

"It was good to have played the match today with the weather being iffy," said head coach Cid Carvalho. "At this point with this only being the fourth match we've played, the girls need to be out there playing and get match-tough. I'm happy to be able to get this match in and I'm very proud of their performance today against a very good UNC Wilmington team."

The Eagles will be home again on Fri., Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at Rock Hill Tennis Center against Elon, then have a quick turnaround to head to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman on Sat., Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
