ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop University athletics department announced Thursday a new strategic plan initiative that will carry the department through the year 2025, in line with the strategic plan of the overall university.

The "Winthrop Athletics Strategic Plan: Drive to '25" presents six departmental goals, each corresponding with specific Winthrop University strategic plan goals and initiatives. The development of the plan was led by Director of Athletics Dr. Ken Halpin and Vice President for University Relations Dr. Jeffrey Perez.

"This plan establishes a vision for our department," said Halpin. "It describes and defines a destination for where we want to go and how we are going to get there, what success looks like, and makes sure our people understand that if we accomplish the metrics outlined in our plan that we will have executed a successful path towards an intentional destination."

The six goals include target and stretch benchmark metrics in areas such as graduation, post-graduation job or school placement rates for student-athletes, championships, winning percentage, attendance, community outreach, revenue and staff diversity. Hear more about the plan from Dr. Halpin here.

For the thorough process of developing the Drive to '25 plan Halpin and Perez relied on multiple campus entities and viewpoints, including non-athletics staff, coaches, student-athletes, university President Dr. Dan Mahony and the university Board of Trustees. "I am very proud that President Mahony and Director of Athletics Ken Halpin asked me to help move forward strategic planning for Winthrop Athletics," said Perez.  "Working with representatives from across the university and everyone in the athletics department we developed a comprehensive plan with clear goals and measurable objectives that reflects the university's own strategic plan, The Winthrop Plan.  This was a team effort that produced a model for athletics department strategic planning."

In addition to seven-year metrics, the plan lays out Winthrop Athletics' mission, values and vision, including the D.R.I.V.E. acronym to represent the department's values:

We will DRIVE our organization to the future.
Diversity – We will be leaders in diversity.
Results – We will focus on obtaining measurable results.
Integrity – We will do the right thing always.
Vision – We will create the future.
Excellence – We will maintain the impossible pursuit of perfection.

"We are intentional about building a positive culture that will build leaders and champions that will help our student-athletes and staff live a life that they are proud of and that influences change for other people that they encounter," said Halpin.
