Men's Tennis Opens the Season at N.C. State Saturday

Quiroz, Teixeira nationally ranked No. 42 in doubles.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Winthrop men's tennis heads to Raleigh to open the 2018 spring season Sat., Jan. 13 on the road at ACC opponent N.C. State University with the match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

"We are all so excited to be back together as a team and to be competing again," said third-year head coach John Collins. "We have a very competitive group of guys and they are eager to start pursuing their goals this season." 
 
Winthrop has been predicted to finish third in the Big South Conference by the league's coaches, receiving two first-place votes.

CLIMBING THE RANKS
Doubles pair Diego Quiroz and Ruy Teixeira entered the national rankings at No. 42 in the Oracle/ITA Division I National Doubles Rankings after the completion of the fall tournament season. The national ranking is the first under Collins.

"The national ranking shows that we are getting better and that we are prepared to compete at a high level this spring," said Collins.

Quiroz and Teixeira competed at a high level this fall, advancing to the quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championships in October. The duo earned two tournament titles at the Elon Invitational and the SC Collegiate Tennis Championships. Their fall wins included defeating pairs from in-state foes Clemson and South Carolina.

A BIT ABOUT THE PACK
NC State's Alexis Galarneau is ranked No. 16 in the nation in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Singles Rankings. In the doubles rankings, Galarneau and his partner, Michael Ogden, are ranked No. 32. Quiroz and Teixeira faced members of the Pack in the fall, defeating Igor and Ivan Savelijc 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the ITA Regional Championships.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will stay on the road for their next two matches, taking on Navy and ECU in Greenville, N.C., Jan. 27-28. Winthrop's home opener is set for Sat., Feb. 10 against Wofford at 12 p.m. at Rock Hill Tennis Center.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
