DURHAM, NC – Sophomore Lauren Proctor provided the Winthrop women's tennis team two upsets Friday afternoon but the Eagles fell 4-1 to the 24th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Ambler Tennis Center on the campus of Duke University.
Despite a strong performance at the #1 doubles spot, the Eagles dropped the doubles point. At #1 doubles, the duo of Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman downed the 71st-ranked pair of Brittany Lindl and Eva Repic 6-4. Caitlin Cridland and Alisa Soloveva fell 6-3 at #2 doubles while Aida Kelic and Alya Mourad fell 6-0 at #3.
Tennessee, needing only three singles victories, put some distance between themselves and the Eagles earning two early victories at the #3 and #4 singles matches.
Proctor tried to give the Eagles some life from the top singles spot as she downed the 42nd-ranked Lindl in two sets. Proctor took the first set 7-6, winning the tiebreak 7-5. In the second set, Proctor cruised past Lindl 6-2. Tennessee closed the match with a two-set victory on court six. Alisa Soloveva, who's match was unfinished in the third set, took the first set from her counterpart 6-2 before dropping the second set by the same score.
Winthrop closes the 2017 season with a 19-6 overall record while Tennessee improves to 19-11 overall and will play the winner of Duke and Boston on Saturday in the tournament's second round.
