ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop women's tennis team, ranked 58
th this week by the ITA, remained unbeaten in Big South Conference play as it defeated UNC Asheville 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
Winthrop swept the doubles competition to take an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
Lauren Proctor, ranked 87
th this week, and
Megan Kauffman snapped the six-match winning streak of Asheville's No. 1 duo of Kylee Shipley and Hannah Francisco with a 6-3 win. At the No. 2 doubles position,
Caitlin Cridland and
Alisa Soloveva defeated the Bulldogs' Hunter Hall and Amalie Davidsen 6-0, while the No. 3 pairing of
Alya Mourad and
Aida Kelic defeated
Christin Louw and Emily Sidor 6-2.
The Eagles claimed five of the six singles matches at positions 1 thru 5. Proctor improved to 15-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Francisco. Soloveva downed Shipley 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, while Cridland made quick work of Hall by winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
Davidsen fell on court No. 4, Kauffman downed Davidsen 6-3, 6-1, and Kelic won at No. 5 over Sidor 7-5, 6-2. Asheville's No. 6 Louw won a hard fought 7-5, 7-5, match over Mourad.
Winthrop will travel to eastern North Carolina this weekend as the Eagles will take on UNC Wilmington on Friday at 2 p.m. before facing Campbell on Saturday at 10 a.m.
