ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will travel to Spartanburg on Wednesday to take on Wofford at 6 pm at Russell C. King Field.
The Eagles (9-11, 2-1 BSC) are coming off an opening Big South series win over UNC Asheville as both victories were shutouts. The Eagles won the series opener 8-0 behind eight shutout innings by
Reece Green and took the finale 1-0 behind
Colton Rendon's eight scoreless innings. Wofford (9-12) enters the game with a two-game losing streak and is coming off a 17-8 loss to Yale this past Sunday.
Winthrop will start freshman
Zach Peek on the mound against the Terriers as he enters the game with a 1-0 record and a 5.89 ERA. He will be on a pitch count, according to head coach
Tom Riginos. The Terriers will send Matt Ellmyer to the mound. He enters the game with a 0-1 record and a 4.76 ERA,
Junior shortstop
Mitch Spires has been hot at the plate and enters the game on a 13-game hitting streak. He also leads the team with a .406 batting average, 26 hits, and 17 runs scored.
Sophomores
Brandon Fite and
Hunter Lipscomb also have streaks going. Fite is on a seven-game hitting streak while Lipscomb has reached base in 13 straight games.
The Terriers have five guys batting over .300 led by Brett Hash leads the team with 26 hits 15 RBI while batting .321 in 21 games.
