Just a week ago the Eagles fell at home to High Point, which ended a seven-game win streak and was the second loss at home in league play this season. The Eagles have still won 18-of-21 contests at home against league foes and hope to improve on that number and keep pace in the league standings.
The Eagles bounced back from their home loss to High Point with a convincing win at Radford, 81-65 on Wednesday. Senior
Keon Johnson, the team's leading scorer at 20.7 ppg, led the way with 23 points while Anders and
Bjorn Broman each scored 14 points. The road win was the eighth straight for the Eagles and their national leading 10
th road win of the season.
Johnson slightly increased his scoring average in league play to 22.5 ppg. Johnson became the first player in program history last season to average 20 or more points during league play. He's also closing in on the program's all-time leading scorer Charles Brunson as he now trails by 55. Johnson is five points away from 1,800 and when he reaches that mark he'll be the 16
th player in Big South history to do so. Johnson scored 22 points in the first meeting with Campbell.
Junior
Xavier Cooks remains second on the team in scoring at 15.1 ppg (6
th in the Big South). He's also leading the team in rebounding at 8.2 (3
rd in the Big South) as he reached 600 in his career on Wednesday as he became the 39
th player in league history to reach that mark. In the win over Campbell on Jan. 14, Cooks was a rebound shy of a double-double at 13 points, nine rebounds. He also had two assists and three blocks.
The first meeting between Winthrop and Campbell saw the Eagles pull away about five minutes into the second half. Campbell had cut the Eagles lead to seven points on a couple of occasions but Winthrop pushed its lead to double-figures and consistently led by 10 or more until 1:35 left. That's when Campbell made it a five point game only to have Johnson respond with a three-pointer with 51 seconds left to seal the deal.
This marks the 36
th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Camels. Campbell leads the series 20-15 in all games, but the Eagles have captured two of the last three meetings. The only loss in the last three meetings did come at the Winthrop Coliseum on Dec. 31, 2015.
Campbell is coming off an 80-68 loss to Gardner-Webb and has lost two in a row. They'll look to end that streak on the road where the Camels are 4-5.
Sophomore Chris Clemons is the top scorer in the league at 23.0 ppg and averages 23.6 ppg in league play. He's led the team in scoring 19 times and has 15 games of 20 or more points.
