EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop suffered a tough overtime loss Saturday afternoon on the road at High Point. The Eagles overcame a one-goal deficit twice in the contest but the Panthers were able to find the overtime winner less than four minutes into the extra period. The Eagles got scoring from Allie Thomas and Katie Colwick as Izzy Barton assisted on the Colwick tally. Thomas' goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and she has totaled 15 points on the year.
SCOUTING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
Charleston Southern kicked off the Big South slate with two victories over UNC Asheville and Presbyterian. Since then, the Buccaneers are winless, dropping four contests and drawing one. Charleston fell 1-0 in overtime Saturday on the road at Liberty.
Jordan Newman leads the Buccaneers in scoring this season with five goals to go along with two assists for 12 points. Sidney Doherty and Lydia Frierson each have tallied two goals. Alyssa Dellacqua has played every minute in goal this season, allowing 1.33 goals per game while making 80 percent of her saves.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Entering the final week, the Eagles have six points in the Big South Standings and currently sit in a three-way tie for sixth place with Radford and UNC Asheville. The Eagles hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Asheville. Charleston Southern sits alone in fifth place with seven points.
The top four seeds for the Big South Tournament have already been secured. While the exact finishing positions are not yet known, Liberty, Longwood, Campbell and High Point will each host a quarterfinal contest. The top eight teams will qualify for the tournament and currently nobody has been mathematically eliminated.
SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles and Buccaneers have played a very even series over the years as Winthrop owns a slight edge at 6-5-5. The Eagles have lost the last two matches in Charleston with their last victory coming in 2011.
COMING UP NEXT
Winthrop closes out its regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Campbell Camels at Eagle Field. The game will be senior day as the Eagles' five seniors will be recognized prior to the match.
