EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop is coming off a tough 2-1 loss at home to Presbyterian Saturday afternoon. Despite controlling the majority of possession against the Blue Hose, the Eagles couldn't put away their chances. Allie Thomas netted the Eagles' lone goal of the game on an assist from Natalie Royaards. The goal was Thomas' team-leading fifth of the season. Her five goals are tied for fifth in the Big South this season.
SCOUTING UNC ASHEVILLE
UNC Asheville enters Wednesday's contest with a 6-6-1 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the Big South. The Bulldogs handed High Point its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, coming away with a 1-0 victory.
Courtney Naber has led the Bulldogs offensively this season with six goals and one assist while Caroline Houser has netted three goals and assisted on three others. Bryson Lee has played all but four minutes in goal this season for the Bulldogs, allowing 1.64 goals per game while making 66 percent of her saves.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Including Wednesday's contest the Eagles have four conference matches remaining this season. The top eight teams will qualify for the Big South Tournament and Winthrop currently sits in a three-way tie for 8th place with Radford and Presbyterian but would lose the head-to-head tiebreaker against each. A win on Wednesday for the Eagles would be crucial as it could vault them as high as fifth in the standings.
SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's match will be the 19th all-time meeting between the Eagle and Bulldogs. UNC Asheville holds a 10-7-1 edge in the all-time series. The series has seen a string of runs for both teams. Asheville downed the Eagles six straight times from 2003-2005 and Winthrop bested the Bulldogs in six straight matches from 2009-2014. The Bulldogs have beaten the Eagles the last two years, both by 1-0 scores.
COMING UP NEXT
Winthrop hits the road for its next two matches. The Eagles will travel to High Point on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest against the Panthers.
