ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop women's tennis team won its home opener with a 5-2 victory over Furman on Friday afternoon at Memorial Courts.
The Eagles won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches and claimed four of the six singles matches to even their record at 1-1.
Freshmen
Alya Mourad and
Nida Kamal teamed up at No. 3 doubles to defeat the Furman duo of Hannah Ferrett and Danni Vines, 6-1. Sophomores
Lauren Proctor and
Megan Kauffman clinched the doubles point by knocking off Ansley Speaks and Aryn Greene (6-2) at No. 1, while senior
Caitlin Cridland and freshman
Alisa Soloveva won at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-3 over Katty Weymouth and Katarina Kozarov.
Proctor made it a 2-0 match when she won her No. 1 singles match over Speaks, 6-2, 6-4. Kauffman lost at the No. 4 position to Danni Vines, 6-2, 6-3. Cridland defeated Kozarov, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 before Soloveva clinched the match win by defeating Weymouth 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. Freshman
Aida Kelic claimed a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win over Green at No. 5. Mourad lost to Ferrett, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (6-0) at No. 6.
