ROCK HILL, SC—Looking for a third straight win, Winthrop men's basketball hosts Presbyterian College Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles have not only won two straight but also seven of their last eight games as they enter with an 11-4 overall record and 3-1 mark in the league. PC comes in at 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the Big South. The game will be available on the Big South Network or fans can tune into 104.1 The Bridge as Dave Friedman provides the play-by-play. The first 300 fans through the door will receive a free Winthrop Eagles car flag.
Winthrop is coming off an 83-65 victory over Longwood, which handed the Lancers their first loss in conference play and formed a five-way tie for first in the league standings.
The 11-4 start is the best start under head coach
Pat Kelsey and the best start since 2006-07. In the win over the Lancers, the Eagles set a school record for scoring 80 points in consecutive games against conference opponents as they've now done so in four straight. The Eagles currently lead the Big South in scoring at 79.1 ppg and in league games only at 81.8.
The Eagles feature two of the league's top three scorers in
Keon Johnson and
Xavier Cooks. Johnson is second in the league in scoring at 21.3 ppg and averages a conference-best 27.8 ppg in league games only. Johnson has scored 20 or more points in four straight contests and eight of the last nine. Cooks ranks third in the Big South with 16.1 ppg and 7.4 rpg and has recorded a double-double in back-to-back games. The two of them are trying to become the first teammates in the Big South to finish in the top three in scoring in the league since VMI's Keith Gabriel (17.5) and Stan Okoye (17.1) did so in 2011-12.
Johnson enters the game two points shy of moving all alone into second on the program's all-time scoring list. He is set to pass LaShawn Coulter's mark of 1,670 and become the program's all-time leading Division I scorer. He is now 191 points away from the all-time leader Charles Brunson, a mark that has stood for 25 years.
The bench continued to shine for the Eagles in the win over Longwood as it has done most of the season. The bench scored 33 points led by
Anders Broman's 10 points while
Adam Pickett and
Joshua Davenport each had eight points. The Winthrop bench has scored 30 or more points in eight games this season and the Eagles are a perfect 8-0 in those games.
This will mark the 32
nd meeting all-time as the Eagles hold a 19-12 lead in the all-time series. Winthrop is 12-3 against the Blue Hose during regular season Big South meetings and have won six straight in the series. The two teams first met on Jan. 25, 1979 in Clinton, SC with the Blue Hose winning 83-74.
PC enters the game having dropped five in a row and are currently 0-9 on the road this season.
The Blue Hose are averaging 66.6 ppg led by Jo'Vantae Millner's 12.0 ppg. Reggie Dillard is averaging 9.0 ppg and J.C. Younger is scoring 8.4 per game. In league play Millner leads three players averaging double-figures with 11.8 while Dillard is averaging 10.0 and Ed Drew is scoring 10.3.
PC ranks 4
th in the league in free throw percentage at .702 and third in the league in assists per game at 13.9. In two league games on the road, PC has averaged 67.0 ppg while allowing 74.0.
