After 9-Day Break Men's Soccer Back In Action Tuesday Night At Appalachian State

After a nine-day break of no games, Winthrop men's soccer will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. with a road game at Appalachian State.

It is the final game of a stretch of seven straight games away from home to start the season for the Eagles, who make their debut on Eagle Field this season this coming Saturday. The game will be available for fans to watch on App St. TV.

Winthrop (3-3) is looking to end a losing skid of two games after falling 2-0 against Marist College and UNC Wilmington last weekend.

The Eagles and Appalachian State meet for the 17th time with the Mountaineers holding a strong lead in the all-time series at 10-5-2. The last time these two teams met was in 2015 when the Eagles earned a 2-0 victory that started a stretch of six consecutive wins and an unbeaten streak of seven games. In two of the last three meetings the Eagles have earned victories, but went without a win in the previous 10 meetings. The last time the Eagles won in Boone, NC was 1994 as they are 1-4-1 against the Mountaineers on the road.

Junior Rasmus Arousell leads the Winthrop offense with five points (2g, 1a) while junior's Kenneth Perkinson and Hector Fernandez hold steady in net. Perkinson has started four times and is 1-3 with a 1.75 goals against average while Fernandez is 2-0 with a 0.48 goals against average in two starts.

Winthrop will be the second straight Big South opponent for Appalachian State, which is coming off a 2-0 loss at Longwood on Sept. 17 and enters the game with a 1-5 mark. Jordan Melia leads the Mountaineers in scoring with four points (2 goals). Jake Chasteen has started all six games in goal while Jake Agnew has seen 56:24 in goal as a sub.
