ROCK HILL, SC - The Winthrop men's tennis team bounced back from a loss at Liberty to defeat Campbell 6-1 in a Big South Conference match on Friday at Memorial Courts.
 
The win evens Winthrop's record on the season to 9-9 and improves their conference record to 3-2, while the loss drops the Camels to 6-9 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. 
 
Senior Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN) clinched the match for the Eagles in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 battle over Campbell's Gerard Sola. 
 
Campbell took the doubles point by winning a tight 2-1 decision before the Eagles swept the singles matches. Winthrop's lone doubles victory came at the No. 3 position as senior Michael Chen (Johnson City, TN) and freshman Diego Quiroz (Guayaquil, Ecuador) teamed up for the first time this season to take a 6-3 win over the Camels' Nicolas Rakitin and Sola.
 
In singles, Tremayne Mitchell won at No. 1 with a solid 6-4, 6-4 over the Camels' Lukas Schaefer.  At No. 2, Diego Quiroz tacked on another point for the Eagles, winning 7-5, 6-0 against Lorenzo Schwab.  Ruy Teixeira followed suit at No. 5 with a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Dustin Werner.  Following Patrick's match-clinching win at No. 4, Chen pulled off a comeback at No. 3 to defeat Nicolas Rakitin, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.  Rounding out the Eagles' performance at No. 6 was Aditya Gokhale's 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Datashvili.
 
Winthrop will travel to Boone, NC on Saturday, to take on Appalachian State.
