LYNCHBURG, VA—Winthrop's men dropped a 5-2 tennis match at Liberty on Tuesday afternoon to even their Big South Conference record at 2-2 while they drop to 8-9 overall.
 
With the win, Liberty improved to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in conference.
 
Liberty jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches.  Winthrop's only doubles win came at the No. 1 position where junior Tremayne Mitchell (Johannesburg, South Africa) and senior Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN) defeated the team of Sam Matheson and Egon Sammaai, 6-4.
 
Winthrop's two singles victories were recorded by Mitchell at the No. 2 position and freshman Ruy Teixeira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at No. 5.  Mitchell downed Alex Poynter easily in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, while Teixeira came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Diego Castano, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Winthrop's men will return to action on Friday when the Eagles host Campbell at 2:30 p.m.
