MACON, GA-- The Winthrop men put together a total team effort on Sunday in a 4-3 win over the Mercer Bears at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.  
 
Winthrop improves its record to 6-5 on the season while Mercer drops to 3-9.
 
In doubles action, the Eagles swept all three matches with a notable come from behind 7-5 victory by the No. 2 tandem of senior Michael Chen (Johnson City, TN) and freshman Aditya Gokhale (Pune, India).  The No. 1 duo of senior Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN) and junior Tremayne Mitchell (Johannesburg, South Africa) and the No. 3 team of freshman Diego Quiroz (Guayquil, Ecuador) and sophomore Josh Ryan (Gold Coast, Australia) claimed a pair of 6-2 wins to sweep the doubles point for the second time this season.
 
Quiroz led the way for the Eagles at No. 1 as he gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the match by posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicolas Guillon.
 
Mercer tied the match with victories at the No. 4 and No 2 positions. In the No. 4 position, Patrick put up a strong fight before falling 7-5, 6-2 to Anderson Scarpa.  At No. 2, Mitchell lost a tough match to Sam Philp 7-6, 7-5. Gokhale gave Winthrop the lead again with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over the Fernando Guardia at No. 6.
 
Chen won the match clincher with a thrilling 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 decision over Arnav Mohanty that gave the Eagles a 4-2.  Freshman Ruy Teixeira lost to Arsav Mohanty, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the last match at No. 5.
 
Winthrop returns home where the Eagles will host Troy at Memorial Tennis Courts on Saturday, Mar. 6, at 2:00 pm.
