ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop's 2014-15 men's and women's tennis teams along with four student-athletes from each squad have been honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as ITA All-Academic Teams and ITA Scholar-Athlete award winners.
In order to receive recognition as an All-Academic Team, the program must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 for the fall and spring semesters and student-athletes must attain a 3.50 GPA or higher for both semesters.
The Winthrop men's squad which captured the 2015 Big South Conference championship, compiled a 3.507 team GPA while the women's team achieved a 3.285 GPA.
Three of the four men's ITA Scholar-Athlete winners achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the academic year. They included juniors J.D. O'Brien, Hilton Head, SC, and Steven Patrick, Knoxville, TN, and senior Peter Nagovnak, Kraubath, Austria. Michael Chen, a junior from, Johnson City, TN compiled a 3.9 GPA.
The four ITA Scholar-Athlete winners from the women's team include
Monica Aguado (3.3916) junior, Madrid, Spain;
Ekin Gunaysu (3.963), senior, Ankara, Turkey;
Mariana Humberg (3.648), freshman, Sao Paulo, Brazil; and
Tijana Uzelac (3.969), junior, Belgrade Serbia.

And, our sport has always been a leader when it comes to high performing scholar-athletes," said Timothy Russell, Chief Executive Officer of the ITA. "This group represents the best of the best, as do their coaches who regularly serve as such great teachers and mentors of our sport's finest young people."
