Eagles’ Men’s Tennis Team Blanks Liberty 4-0 to Advance to the Big South Conference Tournament Finals

Joshua Ryan Helps Clinch Doubles Point for the Eagles

ASHEVILLE, NC--No. 3 seed Winthrop advanced to the finals of the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championships defeating No. 2 Liberty, Monday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club. The Eagles, the defending champions, advance to the championship match for the 15th time in school history.

The Eagles scored the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions.  Joshua Ryan and Michael Chen held off Diego Castano and Jason Burgess, 8-6, on court three, while Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak downed Egon Samaai and Sam Matheson on the first court, 8-6.

The Eagles swept the singles points at No. 2, 3 and 6. Michael Chen took the first singles point with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over David Bush on the sixth court. Winthrop extended its lead with Dylan Comerford topping Jorge Azuero (6-4, 6-4) at No. 2 singles slots. Steven Patrick clinched the match, beating Egon Samaa, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.

The Eagles, 14-8, move on to Tuesday's finals where they will have face No. 4 Campbell, last year's tournament runner-up, at 12:00pm.
