ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team dropped their first Big South Conference match of the season 4-3 to Liberty University Thursday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Eagles were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles competition. No. 1 duo of Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak lost to Dillon Segur and Egon Samaai 8-6. The No. 2 combo of Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell topped Jorge Azuero and Sam Matheson 8-3. No. 3 pairing of Michael Chen and Joshua Ryan clinched the doubles point by downing David Bush and Diego Castano 8-7.
The singles competition was filled with several three set battles and unfortunately the ball bounced the wrong way in the end for Winthrop. No. 1 Mitchell beat Segur in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. No. 2 Comerford fell to Matheson 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. No. 3 Patrick lost to Azuero 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. No. 4 Chen was edged by Samaai 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. No. 5 Nagovnak bested Jason Burgess 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. No. 6 Ruben Franzanti couldn't get over the hump losing to Castano 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
Winthrop, 11-6, will look to rebound from their first Big South Conference loss when they continue their home stand this Saturday, April 4 against Radford at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts beginning at 1:00 pm.
