Tijana Uzelac Has Strong Performance In Final Match of the Season for the Lady Eagles
ASHEVILLE, NC—The Winthrop Lady Eagles fell short in a 4-2 loss in the Big South Conference Tournament Semifinals matchup to Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Winthrop allowed Coastal to jump out to an early 1-0 lead by dropping the doubles competition. No. 1 pairing of Alice Garcia and Mariana Humberg lost a hard fought 8-2 match to Libby Scott and Honami Yazawa. The Lady Eagles' No. 2 combo of Ekin Gunaysu and Tijana Uzelac bested Marie Babayan and Sara Bondar 8-2. The No. 3 position was the deciding factor for the doubles point and Coastal's Romane Delay and Cari Berry topped Camille Amrani and Monica Aguado 8-2 for the clincher.
The Lady Eagles battled back winning two of the singles slots but couldn't find a way to finish off the Chanticleers. No. 1 Garcia lost 6-1, 6-0 to Scott. At the No. 2 singles position Winthrop's Gunaysu downed Delay 6-4, 6-0. No. 4 Uzelac edged Bondar 6-0, 7-5. No. 5 Babayan defeated Aguado 6-2, 6-0. No. 6 Berry beat Amrani 6-1, 6-3. The No. 3 position was left unfinished in the third set as Coastal Carolina had already wrapped up the victory.
The Lady Eagles finish the season 12-12 and look to build upon some strong performances from their younger players as they look ahead to next season.
