MYRTLE BEACH, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team dropped a tough 6-1 defeat to Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon in their final regular season match.
The Eagles fell behind early losing the doubles competition. No. 1 pairing of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak fell 8-7 to Phillippe Tsangarides and Kaue Pereira. Winthrop's No. 2 combo of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell downed Pedro Leme and Renan Samed 8-4. Doubles competition was wrapped up with Coastal's Vuk Velickovic and Garik Yedigarian defeating
Michael Chen and
Joshua Ryan 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Winthrop had some tough singles losses only taking the No. 2 position. No. 1 Mitchell fell 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(4). No. 2 Comerford upended Pereira 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 Patrick lost 6-0, 6-4 to Velickovic. At the No. 4 position Nagovnak fell 7-5, 6-1. Winthrop's
Ruben Franzanti lost the No. 5 position to Jabor Al-Mutawa 6-4, 6-3. No. 6 Chen fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Samed.
Winthrop concludes regular season play with a 12-8 overall record and is 5-3 in the Big South Conference.
