ROCK HILL, SC—The Lady Eagles' tennis team finished their regular season with a 7-0 shutout over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
Winthrop obtained the early lead by winning the doubles competition. No. 1 combo of
Alice Garcia and
Mariana Humberg topped Ericka Rivero and Emily McNall 8-3. The No. 2 doubles duo of
Tijana Uzelac and
Ekin Gunaysu bested Christine Boissevain and Lauren Brooker in an impressive 8-0 blanking to clinch the doubles point. Doubles competition was finished with No. 3 Camille Amrani and
Monica Aguado falling 7-6 to Amryn Soldier and Hunter Hall.
The Lady Eagles dominated singles play to finish the season strong winning all positions in straight sets. No. 1 Garcia downed Rivero 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 Gunaysu defeated McNall 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 3 position Humberg was winning 6-2, 2-0 when Amalie Davidson was forced to retire. No. 4 Uzelac edged Hall 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5 singles slot Aguado was victorious over Brooker 6-1, 6-0. The afternoon was wrapped up with No. 6 Amrani taking down the Bulldogs' Caroline Sherrer 6-2, 6-2.
Gunaysu said the win should help prepare Winthrop for next week's conference tournament. "I really believe in our team and I'm confident everyone will give it their all," she said. "It's not going to be an easy tournament but I believe we will be ready to play our best."
Winthrop, 11-11, is awaiting what seed it will be in the Big South Conference Tournament which begins this Monday, April 13.
