ATLANTA, GA—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 4-3 Monday afternoon on a neutral court at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Ga.
The Eagles were fueled by some strong doubles performances, sweeping the doubles competition, and taking the early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 combo of Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak won 8-5 over Alex Arovin and Alberto Esteban. Winthrop's No 2 pairing of Tremayne Mitchell and Steven Patrick topped Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas 8-4. Doubles play was wrapped up with No. 6 duo of Joshua Ryan and Michael Chen beating Carlos Tejas and Jorge Alfonzo 8-7(5).
Tennessee Tech's No. 1 Arovin evened the match with his 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mitchell. No. 2 Comerford regained the lead for Winthrop with a 6-4, 6-4 lead over Esteban. The Golden Eagles were able to tie the match again at 2-2 with No. 3 Mena winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 over Patrick.
Winthrop retook the lead with No. 4 Chen downing Cintas 6-2, 7-6. The match was clinched at the No. 5 position with Nagovnak dropping Tejas in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. No. 6 Ruben Franzanti fell to Alfonzo 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Winthrop, 7-4, will continue its road trip by traveling to face Elon this Friday, Mar. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
