CHARLESTON, SC—The Winthrop Lady Eagles' tennis team's three match win streak was halted when they lost at Charleston Southern 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Winthrop took the early lead winning the doubles competition. No. 1 pairing of
Alice Garcia and
Mariana Humberg topped Angelica Sidorenko and Mi'Kola Cooper 8-2. No. 2 combo of
Ekin Gunaysu and
Tijana Uzelac seized the doubles point defeating Nicolin Luecke and Yvonne Hubler 8-6. At the No. 3 doubles position
Monica Aguado and Camille Amrani fell to Marketa Placha and Sophie Cloessner 8-0.
The Buccaneers won the first three singles positions making it tough for the Lady Eagles to battle back from the 3-1 deficit. No. 1 Garcia lost to Placha 6-0, 6-2. No. 2 Gunaysu fell to Hubler 6-1, 7-5. No. 3 Uzelac was defeated by Sidorenko 6-4, 6-0.
The Lady Eagles won at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles slots evening the score at 3-3. No. 4 Humberg beat Luecke 6-4, 6-2. No. 5 Aguado bested Cooper 6-3, 6-1. However, the Buccaneers' Cloessner proved too tough for Amrani winning 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Eagles, 5-7, will look to rebound when they return home to face Radford Sunday, Mar. 8 at 1:00 pm at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
