Peter Nagovnak lifts Eagles with No. 5 singles victory
GREENSBORO, NC—The Winthrop Eagles men's tennis team bounced back from their loss on Friday with a 4-3 victory at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon.
After dropping the No. 1 doubles position the Eagles rebounded to claim the doubles point. No. 1 combo of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak fell to Randy Phillips and Connor Thompson in a close 8-6 decision. No. 2 duo of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell topped Warren Bryan and William Albright 8-5. At the No 3 doubles position,
Joshua Ryan and
Michael Chen downed James Gray and Logan Walker 8-7 (2).
In the singles competition, Winthrop's No. 1 Mitchell fell to Phillips 6-2, 7-6. No. 2 Comerford won 6-1, 6-2 over Daniel Mark. The Spartans tied the match with No. 3 Cameron Smith's victory over Patrick 4-6, 6-4, (11-8). Winthrop regained the lead with Chen besting Thompson 7-6, 6-2. The Eagles' Nagovnak clinched the match with his win over Bryan 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. At the No. 6 singles spot Ryan fell to Albright 6-3, 6-3.
The Eagles, 6-4, will return home for a match against Tennessee Tech Monday, Mar. 9 at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts at 12:00 noon.
