Winthrop Men's Tennis Team Drops 6-1 Decision to ETSU Friday Afternoon

Michael Chen picks up singles victory for the Eagles

BRISTOL, TN—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team fell 6-1 to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers Friday afternoon at the Bristol (TN) Racquet & Fitness Club.

The Eagles fell behind early losing the doubles competition.  The No. 1 combo of Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak lost to Rogerio Ribeiro and David Biosca 6-2.  At the No. 3 position Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas Del Pino clinched the doubles point for the Bucs by defeating Michael Chen and Joshua Ryan 6-4.  Winthrop's Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell were winning 4-3 over Ismael Merino and Robert Herrera when play was stopped due to ETSU already taking the doubles point.

Singles play began with No. 1 Mitchell dropping his match 6-1, 6-3 to Biosca.  No. 2 Comerford was defeated by Ribeiro in a tough 7-6, 7-6 loss.  No. 3 Patrick was topped by Yllera 6-2, 6-3.  Winthrop was able to take away something positive from the match with No. 4 Chen downing Huertas in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.  ETSU won both No. 5 and No. 6 positions with Merino 6-0, 6-2 over Nagovnak and Herrera 6-0, 6-1 over Ryan.

The Eagles, 5-4, will continue their road trip Saturday, Mar. 7, when they travel to face the UNC Greensboro Spartans at 12:00 noon
