BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The Lady Eagles' tennis team won its second match in a row by defeating the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. This marks the first time this season Winthrop has been able to string together consecutive wins.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles competition. The No. 1 pairing of
Alice Garcia and
Mariana Humberg downed Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi 8-5. No. 2 duo of
Ekin Gunaysu and
Tijana Uzelac topped Ioanna Markesini and Melissa Esguerra 8-3 clinching the doubles point. At the No. 3 doubles position
Monica Aguado and Camille Amrani fell to Jessica Brumit and Jayde Viccars 8-3.
The singles competition began with No. 1 Garcia dropping her match to Choo 6-4, 7-6. No. 2 Gunaysu bested the Bucs' Reginka Nychytailova 6-2, 7-6. At No. 3 singles Uzelac had a three set battle with Gerbasi coming out victorious 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. No. 4 Humberg clinched the match with her victory over Markesini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
ETSU finished the competition off by winning the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. No. 5 Aguado lost to Brumit 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The Bucs won the No. 6 position by default.
Winthrop, 4-6, will look to keep the winning streak alive when they next face the Longwood Lancers this Friday, Mar. 6 at 2:00 pm at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
