ORANGEBURG, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team fell to South Carolina State 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Bulldogs' facilities in Orangeburg.
The Eagles fell behind early losing the doubles competition. No. 1 pairing of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak lost 8-5 to Rodney Carey and Martin Figura. No. 2
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell fought back with an 8-4 victory over Soufiane Mouline and Edgar Diaz. However, the Bulldogs were able to clinch the doubles point when their No. 3 combo of Stanislav Baco and Jakub Vitek defeated Winthrop's
Michael Chen and
Joshua Ryan 8-4.
Winthrop's No. 1 Mitchell tied the match at 1-1 by downing Carey 7-5, 1-6, 6-2. The Bulldogs stretched to a 3-1 lead winning No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. No. 2 Comerford fell to Figura 6-3, 6-2 and No. 3 Patrick fell to Vladyslav Yanchenko 6-4, 6-3. The Eagles looked to get back in the match with No. 4 Chen dropping Baco 6-1, 6-0. However, the Bulldogs pulled away taking both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. No. 5 Nagovna lost 6-3, 7-5 to Mouline and No. 6 Ryan lost 6-1, 6-2 to Vitek.
Winthrop, 11-5, will look to bounce back from this loss when they host Big South Conference foe Liberty this Thursday, April 2 at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts beginning at 1:00 pm.
