No. 6 Ruben Franzanti Finishes Afternoon With Singles Victory in Straight Sets
BOX SCORE ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team stretched their winning streak to five straight and ran their Big South Conference record to 3-0 with their 6-1 victory over UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
Winthrop swept the doubles competition to take the early 1-0 lead by seizing the doubles point. No. 1 combo of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak downed Alex Croker and Brett Landau 8-4. No. 2 pairing of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell bested Thomas Panoulas and John Schubel 8-3. Doubles play was finished with No. 3
Michael Chen and
Joshua Ryan winning 8-7(1) over Daniel Kripak and Josh Swindler.
Winthrop dictated the singles competition winning every position other than No. 4. No. 1 Mitchell beat Kripak 7-5, 6-4. No. 2 Comerford won against Panoulas 6-4, 6-4. No. 3 Patrick defeated Swindler 6-3, 6-2. The Eagles' No. 4 Chen fell in a super tiebreak 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8). No. 5 Nagovnak edged Landau 6-4, 6-1. Winthrop's No. 6
Ruben Franzanti finished the day with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Schubel.
Winthrop, 10-4, will try to extend their winning streak this Sunday, Mar. 22 when they host Gardner-Webb at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
