BUEIS CREEK, NC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Campbell 4-3 Wednesday afternoon for their fourth straight victory.
Winthrop fell behind early losing the doubles competition and dropping the doubles point. At the No. 1 doubles position
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak lost to Mathinus Visser and Adrien Rossignon 8-6. The Eagles' No. 2 combo of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell downed Lukas Schaefer and Jonathan O'Neal 8-5. Campbell clinched the doubles point when their No. 3 Steven Billington and Nicolas Rakitin defeated
Michael Chen and
Joshua Ryan 8-5.
Campbell stretched to a 3-0 lead taking the No. 3 and 4 singles slots. No. 3 Patrick lost to Schaefer 6-2, 6-4 and No. 4 Chen fell 7-5, 7-5 to O'Neal. Winthrop battled back winning No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 singles. No. 1 Mitchell downed Billington 7-5, 6-4. No. 5 Nagovnak bested Visser 7-5, 6-2. No. 6
Ruben Franzanti topped Lorenz Schwab 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. No. 2 Comerford clinched the match for Winthrop by defeating Rakitin in a three set battle 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Winthrop, 9-4, will look to keep the streak alive when they return home to face UNC Asheville this Friday, Mar. 20 at 2:00 pm at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
