Peter Nagovnak Helped Boost Eagles to Victory with Both Singles and Doubles Victories
BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team opened up Big South Conference play with a 6-1 victory over Longwood Monday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Eagles began the afternoon by sweeping the doubles competition and taking the doubles point. No. 1 pairing of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak downed Daniel Elston and Steed Johnson 8-2. No. 2 combo of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell topped Florian Uffer and Alfonso Castellano 8-0. At the No. 3 doubles position
Michael Chen and
Joshua Ryan defeated Bharani Sanker and Rosen Ilchev 8-3.
Longwood tied the match at 1-1 with No. 1 Elston's 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (9) win over Mitchell. It was all Eagles from there on out winning the No. 2-6 singles positions. No. 2 Patrick won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 over Castellano. No. 3 Chen bested Johnson 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (8). No. 4 Nagovnak beat Sankar 6-1, 6-4. Winthrop's No. 5
Ruben Franzanti was victorious over Lachlan Manser 7-5, 6-0. No. 6 Ryan wrapped up the afternoon with his convincing victory over Ilchev 6-1, 6-4.
Winthrop head coach
Sergey Belov was very pleased with the way his team performed in the conference opener. "I believe our guys played very well today," said Coach Belov. "We started off with great doubles performances and carried that momentum over to the singles competition. We are looking forward to our next conference match this Wednesday against Campbell."
Winthrop, 8-4, will try to build upon the victory when the Eagles travel to Campbell this Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 2:30 pm.
