BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Lady Eagles' tennis team came up short against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Center.
Winthrop fell behind early losing the doubles competition. The No. 1 pairing of
Alice Garcia and
Mariana Humberg continued their strong play winning their sixth straight doubles match 8-4 over Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Barscheuskaya. However, the Rams took both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions claiming the doubles point. No. 2 duo of
Ekin Gunaysu and
Tijana Uzelac lost 8-6 to Cindy Chala and Darya Berezhnaya. No. 3 combo of
Monica Aguado and Camille Amrani also lost 8-6 to Ludivine Burguiere and Alzbeta Veverkova.
Singles play began with No. 1 Gunaysu losing to Chala 6-1, 6-1. The Lady Eagles rebounded from their 2-0 deficit with No. 2 Garcia's 7-6, 7-5 victory over Kvitashvili. No. 3 Humberg was topped by Barscheuskaya 6-4, 7-5. Winthrop battled back with No. 4 Uzelac winning 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (9) over Burguiere.
The VCU Rams proved to be too tough winning at No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots and taking the match. No. 5 Aguado couldn't get over the hump in her 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (5) loss to Berezhnaya. No. 6 Amrani lost 6-2, 6-2 to Veverkova.
The Lady Eagles, 6-8, will look to bounce back from their loss when they travel to Huntington, WV to face Miami (OH) this Saturday, Mar. 14.
