CHARLESTON, SC—The Winthrop Eagles men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the College of Charleston Cougars at the Patriots Point Tennis Center earlier today.
At the No. 1 doubles spot Winthrop's Dylan Commerford and
Peter Nagovnak lost to Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman 6-3. No. 2 positioned
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell downed Charleston's Rodrigo Encinas and Zack Lewis 6-3. Doubles play was concluded with the No. 3 duo of Josh Record and Charlie Ghriskey winning the doubles point for Charleston over
Ruben Franzanti and
Michael Chen 6-4.
No. 1 singles saw the Eagles' Mitchell winning in straight sets over Encinas 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 2 position Comerford lost to Allanic after a third set super tiebreak 6-7, 6-1, 10-4. No. 3 Patrick was bested 6-0, 6-2 by Ghriskey. The Cougars' Vasily Kichigin topped Nagovnak 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. No. 5 Lewis beat Franzanti 6-4, 6-4. The afternoon finished with Winthrop's No. 6 Chen winning his match over Faiman 6-2, 7-6(4).
Winthrop, 2-2, will be back in action when they return home for a match against Appalachian State Saturday, Feb. 14.
