Alice Garcia Downs Nationally Ranked Rasolomalala at No. 2 Singles
RALEIGH, NC—The Winthrop Eagles women's tennis team concluded their road trip at Raleigh with a tough 5-2 loss to the No. 67 nationally ranked Georgia State Panthers Saturday morning at the J.W. Isenhour Indoor Center.
Winthrop's No. 1 pairing of
Alice Garcia and
Tijana Uzelac fell to the No. 40 nationally ranked duo of Tarani Kamoe and Linn Timmerman 6-4. The Eagles' No. 2 combo of
Mariana Humberg and
Ekin Gunaysu put forth a strong performance in a 6-4 victory over Kristin Rehse and Niri Rasolomalala. The Panthers won the No. 3 position by forfeit, therefore claiming the doubles point and early lead.
Singles play began with No. 1 Gunaysu downing Masa Grgan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The Eagles' No. 2 Garcia also won in three sets over No. 102 nationally ranked Rasolomalala 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. The Panthers' No. 69 nationally ranked Timmerman proved to be too tough at the No. 3 position against Humberg winning 6-3, 6-2. No. 4 singles saw Uzelac forcing three sets but coming up short 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 to Rehse. Singles play was capped off with Winthrop's
Monica Aguado dropping a close one to Chaimaa Roudami 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Georgia State won the No. 6 spot by forfeit.
The Lady Eagles, 1-5, will return to the court for their home opener in a match against UNC-Charlotte on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
