RALEIGH, NC—The Lady Eagles' tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to the undefeated North Carolina State Wolfpack Friday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The match featured some good individual performances from Winthrop but they couldn't overcome a strong effort from the Wolfpack squad coming up a few serves short.
NC State built an early lead by winning both of the doubles matches, seizing the doubles point. The No. 1 positioned Ekin Gunaysu and Mariana Humberg fought hard against Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez but fell short 6-4. Elisha Handeand Joanna Nalborska defeated the Eagles' Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac 6-2. The No. 3 doubles position was not played.
Singles play began with Winthrop's No. 1 Garcia dropping a 6-4, 6-1 match to the No. 66 nationally ranked Joanna Nalborska. Gunaysu took the first set but was unable to finish Liza Fieldsend off at the No. 2 position losing 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 3 position, Uzelac was bested by Elisha Hande 7-6, 6-2. No. 4 positioned Humberg forced a decisive third set but came up short 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 against Martinez. The Eagles' Monica Aguado was topped 6-1, 6-3 by Sophie Nelson at the No. 5 spot. The No. 6 singles position was not played.
The Winthrop Lady Eagles' tennis team, 1-4, will face the Georgia State Panthers Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:00 a.m. in Raleigh, NC at NC State's facility.
