BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' men's tennis team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 4-3 today at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Eagles grabbed the early lead by sweeping the doubles competition and seizing the doubles point. Winthrop's No. 1 pairing of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak downed Markus Schultz and Amaud Holl 6-0. The No. 2 combo of
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell topped the Highlanders Andres Alban and Jan Cimrman 6-1. At the No. 3 position
Ruben Franzanti and
Michael Chen won 6-3 over Richard Rangga and Luka Kaic.
NJIT battled back winning the first two singles positions and taking the lead 2-1 in the match. No. 1 Schultz beat Mitchell in a third set super tiebreak 2-6, 6-4 (11). No. 2 Alban won 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 over Comerford. The Eagles' No. 3 Patrick edged Holl 7-5, 6-3. No. 4 Chen fell to Cimrman in a third set super tiebreak 6-4, 3-6, (6). Nagovnak won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 over Rangga at the No. 5 position. The match was wrapped up with No. 6 Franzanti defeating Kaic 6-2, 6-1.
Winthrop, 4-2, will be back in action Friday, Feb. 27 at 3:00 pm when they face Georgia State at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
