BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles men's tennis team bounced back from a loss last time out with a 4-3 win Saturday afternoon over the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Eagles jumped out to the early lead by winning the doubles competition. Winthrop's No. 1 duo of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak downed Oliver Casey and Zach Bost 8-6. The Mountaineers No. 2 Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks won 9-7 over
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell. No. 3 combo
Ruben Franzanti and
Michael Chen seized the doubles point for Winthrop by defeating Jan-Willem Kleynhans and Trey Morris 8-6.
Winthrop carried the momentum into some strong singles performances. No. 1 Mitchell bested Casey in a three set battle 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 Comerford dropped Bost 6-4, 6-0 to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Appalachian State battled back with wins at the No. 3 and 4 positions. No. 3 Patrick fell to Maddocks 7-6, 6-4. No. 4 Nagovnak lost to Webster 6-3, 6-1.
Michael Chen clinched the win for the Eagles at the No. 5 position with a comeback win over Kleynhans 6-7, 6-1, 6-3. The Mountaineers took the No. 6 position with Morris defeating Franzanti 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
"Our guys played very well today and competed until the last points of the match to lead us to victory," Coach
Sergey Belov stated after the win. "We are looking forward to building upon this winning performance."
Winthrop, 3-2, will return to the court next Friday, Feb. 20 with the Eagles play at Elon.
