BOX SCOREROCK HILL, SC—The No. 74 ranked Winthrop women's tennis team won 5-2 over the UNC-Charlotte 49ers Tuesday afternoon in their home opener at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early dropping the doubles point. No. 1 doubles pair of
Alice Garcia and
Tijana Uzelac came up short against Victoria Pahlett and Fluer Holtkamp 6-3.
Ekin Gunaysu and
Mariana Humberg were victorious over Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles spot. The 49ers won the No. 3 doubles position by default.
Winthrop stormed back in singles competition only dropping one set. No. 1 Garcia beat Pahlett 6-4, 6-3. No. 2 Gunaysu took down Vonderschmidt 6-2, 6-4. At the No. 3 position Uzelac won 6-2, 6-1 against Baker. Humberg and Natsuko Takayanagi went to a third set super tiebreak with Humberg coming out on top 7-5, 5-7, (10-8) at the No. 4 spot. No. 5 singles saw the Eagles'
Monica Aguado besting Holtkamp 6-3, 6-3. The 49ers won the No. 6 singles position by default.
Winthrop, 2-5, will be back in action at home on Friday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 pm vs. No. T-74 nationally ranked Mississippi State.
