BOX SCORECHARLESTON, SC—The Winthrop women's tennis team claimed its first victory of the season by posting a 5-2 verdict over the College of Charleston Cougars Sunday afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point. Both teams were hungry for a win after opening the season 0-3.
The Lady Eagles got off to a strong start by claiming the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of
Alice Garcia and
Tijana Uzelac from Winthrop opened up doubles play with an impressive 6-2 win over Katherine Schofield and Jenny Falcone. The Cougars' No 2. combo of Mara Argyriou and Helena Nyikos were shut out by the Eagles'
Ekin Gunaysu and
Mariana Humberg 6-0. Charleston won the No. 3 doubles position by forfeit.
The singles competition was filled with a series of hard fought three set matches with Winthrop somehow finding a way to get over the hump in nearly all of them. Singles play began with the No. 1 positioned Garcia pulling out a three set victory over Samantha Maddox 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 Gunaysu won in straight sets against Charleston's Argyriou 6-4, 6-1. Schofield lost to Uzelac at the No. 3 position 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. No. 4 Humberg downed the Cougars' Falcone 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. The Eagles' No. 5
Monica Aguado fell to Nyikos 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Charleston's No. 6 Sara Jane Jones won by default.
Winthrop's Uzelac, a junior from Serbia, said the Lady Eagles put forth a great team effort in notching the win today. "I think we all did a pretty good job of picking each other up as the match went along," said Uzelac. "We played with a lot of energy today and hope we can ride out the momentum this win provides us."
The Winthrop Eagles, 1-3, will return to action again on Friday, Feb. 6, against the North Carolina State Wolfpack in Raleigh, NC.
