Men's Soccer Heads To Longwood Looking To Claim Share Of Big South Regular Season Title

Gatzke Leads The Eagles With Six Assists

Eagles Can Earn Top Spot For Tournament With A Win

ROCK HILL, SC—The regular season comes to an end for the Winthrop men's soccer team this Saturday, Nov. 7 as it travels to Farmville, VA to take on Longwood at noon with a chance to claim the top seed for next week's Big South Championship.

MATCH SNAPSHOT
Winthrop (8-6-1, 6-1-1 BSC) at Longwood (9-7-1, 4-3-1 BSC)
Saturday, Nov. 7 | 12:00 p.m. | Athletics Complex (Farmville, VA)
Live Stats / Live Video (none)

WHAT'S AT STAKE
A victory over Longwood will give the Eagles a tie for first place in the league standings with Radford. If the Eagles tie for the regular season championship, they will earn the #1 seed   for the Big South Conference Tournament. A tie would put them in a tie for second with Coastal Carolina and the Eagles would then become the third seed. A loss would drop them straight to third. Longwood is playing for a Top 4 seed and hosting a quarterfinal game on Nov. 10. A victory would give Longwood the #4 seed for the Tourney. The Lancers could still be the #4 seed with a tie and a Campbell loss at UNC Asheville.

ENDING WHERE IT ALL STARTED
This game will be the final regular season game of head coach Posipanko's career and what better place for it to come to a close than the place it began for him. Posipanko began his collegiate coaching career at Longwood in 1979 where he turned the program into a nationally-ranked program at the NCAA Div. II level. In his 10 seasons at Longwood, he won 117 games and is still the all-time winningest coach in the program's history. The program finished in the Top 25 in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. In 1988 the program reached as high as 4th in the national rankings.

DOUBLE DUTY
Senior Jordi Lluch has been a mainstay at the center back position since his arrival to the team in 2012. He's made 73 appearances with 72 as the anchor on the backline. Through his first three seasons Lluch would join the attack sparingly and recorded his first career points in 2014 with four assists. However, this season Lluch has become one of the top scoring threats in the country. He has a team-high 10 goals on the year, which is more than any other central defender at the NCAA Div. I level.  His 23 points (10g, 3a) also lead the Eagles.

LAST MATCH
The Eagles captured a 4-1 victory over Campbell in their final home game of the regular season. The win clinched a Top 4 finish for the Eagles as they will host a quarterfinal game on Nov. 10. The game against the Camels saw three goals in the first four minutes and 45 seconds.   Winthrop struck first followed by a Campbell goal 34 seconds later and then a Winthrop goal 26 seconds after that for a 2-1 lead early. The Eagles held the score at 2-1 at the half and tacked on two second half goals by Lluch. Jordan Stoddart had a goal and an assist while Max Hasenstab scored the eventual game-winning goal.

NCAA RANKING
Coming off a four-goal output in the win over Campbell the Eagles cracked the Top 10 nationally in scoring at 2.20 goals per game. Winthrop is also 9th in shots on goal per game and 11th in shots per game. The Eagles are 19th in total goals, 25th in total points and 31st in total assists. Hasenstab ranks 12th in points per game, 13th in goals per game, 9th in shots on goal per game, 11th in shots per game, 29th in total goals and 43rd in total points. Lluch is 17th in scoring, 19th in goals per game, 21st in total goals and 24th in total points. Marco Gatzke remains in the Top 50 in assists per game at 44th (0.40).

WHO TO WATCH
From the looks of it, the race to lead the team in scoring will come down to Lluch and Hasenstab. Lluch has three goals and an assist in the last two games and earned College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors earlier in the week. Lluch has scored a goal in three of the last four games. Hasenstab has two goals in the last four games and netted the game-winner against Campbell. In the meeting with Longwood last season, Hasenstab had two goals. Willy Miezan leads the Lancers with 12 goals on the year and 25 total points as he's scored a goal in three straight games. He's paced an offense that has 11 goals in the last three games. The Eagles will be without the services of senior midfielder Patrick Barnes, who is a workhorse for this team. Barnes will sit due to yellow card accumulation and will be ready to return for the quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

ABOUT OPPONENT
The Lancers have won two straight and are unbeaten in the last three games. Longwood has also won three of the last five games with the only loss coming to nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina in double overtime. At home this season the Lancers are 6-4 but 3-1 in the last four games there. In Big South games the Lancers have been involved in five games that have been decided by a single-goal or tie. Miezan leads the team in scoring and is one of 10 players on the team with at least one goal. Miezan and Crandall lead the team with three game-winning goals. Carlos Canas leads the team with 11 appearances and nine starts in goal as he's 6-3 with a 0.98 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY
This series started back in 1978 in Bristol, TN but that was the only meeting until the team's met up again in 2002. This will mark the ninth meeting between Winthrop and Longwood. The Eagles lead the all-time series 7-1 but lost 2-1 in their last visit to Farmville.
