BOX SCORE

CLEMSON, SC—The No. 66 ranked Winthrop Eagles women's tennis team dropped their first match of the 2015 ITA Women's Kick Off on Saturday afternoon against the No. 14 ranked Clemson Tigers 6-1.

The afternoon opened up with Clemson taking the doubles point.  The No. 1 position saw the Winthrop combo of Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac lose 6-1 to Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies.  Clemson took the doubles point when Romy Koelzer and Tristen Dewar, the No. 2 doubles team in the country and winners of the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American doubles title last fall, also won 6-1 against the Eagles' Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu.  At the No. 3 position Winthrop's Monica Aguado and Mariana Humberg were leading 4-3 when play was halted as Clemson had already taken the doubles point.

Singles play began at the No. 1 position with the Lady Eagles' Garcia forcing three sets but dropping a heartbreaker to No. 85 nationally ranked Romy Koelzer, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.  No. 2 position was cut short when Beatrice Gumulya won by retirement over Winthrop's Cridland.  Gumulya was leading 7-6, 4-4 when Cridland had to retire due to injury.  Clemson's Dewar, No. 3, defeated Uzelac 6-2, 6-1.  No. 4 Rompies downed the Eagles' Gunaysu 6-3, 6-2.  No 5. Mariana Humberg was topped by the Tigers' Daniela Ruiz in a third set super tiebreak 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).  Winthrop was able to take away some momentum from this match when No. 6 Monica Aguado won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 over Clemson's Carola Pederzani.

Winthrop, 0-2, will face No. 42 ranked Washington at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 25.  The match will be held at Clemson's Hoke Sloan Tennis Center and will be Winthrop's final match in the 2015 ITA Women's Kick Off.
