Lynchburg, VA – The Winthrop men's tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat Liberty 5-2, on Saturday.
The Eagles started out slowly, dropping the doubles point to the Flames. In the No. 1 doubles position, Liberty's Jorge Azuero and Alejandro Llamas prevailed, 8-4, over
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak, while Egon Samaai and Dillon Segur captured the No. 2 doubles position for the Flames, defeating
Steven Patrick and
Tremayne Mitchell, 8-2. Shea Thomas and Stan Vaughan finished off the doubles sweep for Liberty, besting
Yuta Hirokawa and
Michael Chen, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles position.
Winthrop picked up its play in the singles competition, winning five of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles position, Hirokawa edged Thomas, 7-6, 7-6, while Samaai prevailed, 6-4, 6-3, over Patrick in the No. 2 singles position. Comerford won in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, against Azuero in the No. 3 singles position, and Mitchell overwhelmed Llamas, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles position. In the No. 5 singles position,
Juan Pablo Boada overpowered Vaughan, 6-2, 6-2, and Chen was victorious over Segur, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles position.
The Eagles overall record now stands at 9-7, and 2-0 in conference. Winthrop will finish its road trip on Saturday, March 23
rd, with a match at Radford.
