#71 Women's tennis outlasts Wake Forest 4-3

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winthrop women's tennis team earned a hard fought victory over Wake Forest, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon, extending their winning streak to four.

The Demon Deacons gained control early by capturing the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles position, Winthrop's Andressa and Alice Garcia were victorious, 8-4, over Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner, but Wake Forest's #72 ranked doubles pairing Luisa Fernandez and Samantha Asch prevailed, 8-5, against Ekin Gunaysu and Caitlin Cridland in the No. 2 doubles position. Brigita Bercyte and Karen Forman secured the doubles point for Wake Forest, defeating Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson, 8-5, in the No. 3 doubles position.

After dropping the doubles point, the Eagles fought hard in the singles competition to earn the victory. In the No. 1 singles position, Andressa Garcia edged Kimmy Guerin, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, in a three set thriller, while Alice Garcia was victorious in another three set nail-biter, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, against Fernandez in the No. 2 singles position. Cridland prevailed over Asch, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles position, but Gardiner defeated Uzelac in the No. 4 singles position, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 5 singles position, Gunaysu overpowered Zhang in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, and Forman bested Monica Aguado, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles position.

When asked about his team's performance, Coach Cid Carvalho stated, "It was a great win for us today! Ekin started our comeback after we lost the doubles point by winning her match in straight sets. Then Andressa and Caitlin won their matches in three hard fought sets, and it came down to Alice. Alice came back from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win 6-4, and give us the victory. I'm very proud of how hard the whole team fought for this win. Go Eagles".

The Eagles record now stands at 6-3, as they will attempt to add to their winning streak on Tuesday, March 18th, at UNC Greensboro.
