Rock Hill, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team fell just short of capturing its second win of the season, falling to UAB, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Courts.
In the doubles round, Winthrop competed valiantly, but UAB came away with the doubles victory. In the No. 1 doubles position, the Eagles team of
Dylan Comerford and
Peter Nagovnak defeated UAB's Donovan McSeveney and Lucas Dirube 6-0, while the Blazer's Mitchell Martell and Chris Helliar were victorious over Winthrop's
Yuta Hirokawa and
Tremayne Mitchell, by a score of 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles position. Rafael Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto won a close match against
Steven Patrick and
Juan Pablo Boada, 6-5, in the No. 3 doubles position, giving UAB the doubles point.
The Eagles fought hard in the singles matches as well, splitting the competition with UAB. In the No. 1 singles position, Helliar defeated Hirokawa 6-2, 6-2, and Rondino won in straight sets over Patrick 6-5, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles position. Dirube prevailed at the No. 3 singles position in 3 sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-5, over Comerford, while Boada was victorious in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, over McSeveney in the No. 4 singles position. Mitchell had a straight sets victory as well in the No. 5 singles position against Martell, winning 6-1, 6-5, and Chen defeated Pinto, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 6 singles position.
The Winthrop men's tennis team will be playing back-to-back matches at home on Sunday, February the 9
th, as they take on Coker College at 9:30 A.M., and College of Charleston at 2:30 P.M., at Memorial Courts.
