Baseball Finishes Strong at Coca-Cola Classic With A 3-1 Win Over Coppin State

Box Score
ROCK HILL, SC- Winthrop's Brock Goodling pitched four shutout innings in relief and allowed just four hits to help the Eagles defeat Coppin State 3-1 on Sunday in the final game of the 2014 Coca-Cola Classic.

Winthrop improved its record to 4-3 with the win and finished the tournament with a 2-2 slate. Coppin State lost 11-1 to Kent State in the first game on Sunday and finished with an 0-4 record.

After neither team could get put a run on the board in the first three innings, Coppin State plated a run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, David Hamlett doubled to center and scored on a single from John Kraft.

Winthrop evened the score in the bottom half of the inning when Zac Goodno drove home Michael Patrick with a double to left field. The Eagles took the lead in the sixth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Goodno that scored Leighton Daniels who had reached on a single and advanced to third after Babe Thomas was hit by a pitch and Michael Patrick drew a walk.. Thomas scored the final run on a passed ball by catcher Rafeal Eigenmann

Goodling, who relieved starter Matt Crohan in the fifth, made the lead stand up as he earned his first win for the Eagles and improves to 1-1 on the season. Kyle Edwards made his first pitching appearance of the season and pitched the ninth inning to pick up the save. Winthrop's three hurlers struck out 10 batters and walked only one while allowing six hits. The loss went to starter Sanhe Davies who gave up all of three Winthrop runs in five-plus innings to fall to 0-1.

Winthrop head coach Tom Riginos believes his team's performance this weekend is something the Eagles can build on heading forward with the season. "Sunday games are always a grind and this was a grind out win. We played a clean game both pitching wise and on defense. We had to make a few adjustments on offense but when we needed to get a big hit we did. We played competitively yesterday against a very good program in Kent State and if we'd eliminated a few miscues it could have been a different outcome."

The Eagles will be back home on Tuesday afternoon when they host USC Upstate at 4 p.m.
