Men's Tennis Earns Convincing 5-2 Victory over Davidson

--The Winthrop men's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 road victory over Davidson on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles had trouble in the doubles round, as Davidson captured two matches and were trailing in the third. In the No. 1 doubles position, Davidson's Conner Evins and Zack Zapatero defeated Winthrop's Peter Nagovnak and Corey DeCandia, 6-4, while Yuta Hirokawa and Tremayne Mitchell were beaten by Evan Watkins and Ricky Saad in the No. 2 doubles position, by a score of 6-2. Robert Lightbourn and Jordan Hart were leading Steven Patrick and Juan Pablo Boada, 5-4, when the doubles point was decided.

In the singles competition, the Eagles were very successful, winning five of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles position, Hirokawa fell short against Lightbourn, 6-5, 6-2. Patrick won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, over Evins in the No. 2 singles position, while Boada followed that up with a 5-6, 6-5, 6-2, victory against Davidson's Watkins in the No. 3 singles position. Mitchell topped Hart in straight sets, 6-5, 6-5, in the No. 4 singles position, and Nagovnak also won in straight sets in the No. 5 singles position over Ricky Saad, 6-2, 6-2. Michael Chen wrapped up and Eagles victory with a 6-3, 6-5, straight sets victory over J.B. Gough.

The Eagles even their record at 1-1 with the victory, and will be in action on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 12 noon at Furman.
