Winthrop Women's Tennis Sweep Both Home Matches Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC-- The Lady Eagles tennis team wins both of their matches Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts. The Lady Eagles defeated conference foe Longwood 7-0 first and then followed with a 4-0 win over South Alabama in the second match. Winthrop is now on a seven match winning streak and their overall record now sits at 12-9 and 6-0 in the Big South.

The Lady Eagles started their day off sweeping doubles play versus Longwood. Senior Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Marta Pinyol and Allison Shulman 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 position, freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) and senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) defeated Sarah Moomau and Malin Allgurin 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) and sophomore Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) defeated Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker 8-0.

In singles action, at No. 1 position Andressa Garcia defeated Marta Pinyol 6-2, 6-2. Alice Garcia defeated Malin Allgurin 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(4), in No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 spot, Giovanna Portioli took down Allison Shulman 6-2, 6-1. Caitlin Cridland took care of Sarah Moomau 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. In the No. 5 position, Ekin Gunaysu defeated Hannah Hill 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) won her match against Nicole Parker in the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Eagles kept their winning ways rolling into the second match with South Alabama. The Lady Eagles started off by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the opening point. Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia took down Emily Newton and Michaela Meszarosova at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portioli clinched the doubles point 8-3 in the No. 2 spot over USA's Mariya Krachok and Ramona Ghermani. At No. 3 doubles, Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu fell short to Cinta Maria Papke and Mary Angela Martin 8-7.

In singles play, Andressa Garcia came up victorious against Michaela Meszarosova in the No. 1 position by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Big South freshman of the week Alice Garcia tallied her second singles victory of the day 6-2, 6-3 over Mariya Krachok at No. 2. Caitlin Cridland clinched the match for the Lady Eagles at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ramona Ghermani. The other three singles match were unfinished. Giovanna Portioli and Emily Newton were at 2-6, 6-0, 2-2 when their match ended. Ekin Gunaysu and Mary Angela Martin were 4-6, 6-4, 1-0, when there match came to a halt. Tijana Uzelac and Cinta Maria Papke stopped play at 3-6, 6-5.

The Lady Eagles will be back at action tomorrow at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts as they play host to UNC Asheville at 2:00 pm.
