Winthrop Women's Tennis Advances to Big South Championship Game

-- The top seeded Winthrop women's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the 2013 Big South Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over the No. 4 seeded Liberty Flames Friday morning at Winthrop Memorial Courts.

Senior Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and Junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) dominated No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 victory over Liberty's Nicola Wellman and Rebekah Jenkins. Freshmen Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) and Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong at No. 3 doubles.

No. 2 doubles went unfinished with Senior Giovanna Portiolli (Curitiba, Brazil) and Freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) leading Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda, 6-5.

Yasmine Alkema cruised through her No. 1 singles match against Cameron Richard, 6-1, 6-0. Andressa Garcia gave Winthrop a 3-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rebekah Jenkins at No. 2 singles. Tijana Uzelac clinched the win for Winthrop at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Liberty's Annisha Domenech.

The Lady Eagles were leading in all three of the other singles matches. At No. 3 singles, Alice Garcia was leading Nicola Wellman 6-2, 1-1. Giovanna Portiolli was leading Valerie Thong 6-1, 4-0 at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Caitlin Cridland was leading Brittany Yang 6-2, 1-0.

"I am proud of my girls for the hard match they played" said Coach Carvalho. "I am excited to play in the championship game tomorrow morning."

The Lady Eagles will play the winner of the #2 Charleston Southern/#3 Campbell match in the Big South Championship game. The championship match will begin at 9:00 am at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
