Winthrop Baseball Set For Weekend Series At Liberty

ROCK HILL, SC --  The Winthrop  baseball team is queued up for a Big South Conference three-game weekend series against Liberty at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, VA.

Winthrop, coming off a pair of non-conference midweek wins, looks to get back on track in conference play against the Liberty Flames.  Winthrop was running on all cylinders Wednesday at The Winthrop Ballpark as the Eagles unloaded for 14 hits in the 11-2 win over Charlotte.  Outfielder Cody Dolan homered in his second straight game as senior Matt Lobacz followed with a solo shot of his own over the right field fence.  Freshman southpaw Sam Kmiec (2-5) collected the win for the Eagles allowing just one run on two hits in four innings of work.

Winthrop, 14-25 on the season and 2-10 in the Big South, now turns its attention to Liberty who has posted a 20-18 (6-6) record on the year including a 3-2 win over #5 South Carolina earlier this season.  The teams are slated for a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, a 6:00 p.m. game on Saturday, and the series finale on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Historically, the Eagles are 40-39 all-time against Liberty, however, they are 16-25 against the Flames when playing in Lynchburg.  Liberty is also 15-5 at Worthington Stadium this season.  In last year's series with Liberty, the Eagles dropped two out of three games to the Flames in Rock Hill.

Liberty is led at the plate by Bryan Aanderud (.345 avg.) and Trey Wimmer (.326 avg.) while Ryan Cordell leads the team with five homeruns and 30 runs batted in.  As a team, the Flames are hitting .263 on the season while scoring over five runs per game.  The Liberty pitching staff maintains a 4.63 ERA while allowing opposing hitters a .267 batting average.

Cody Dolan continues to lead the way offensively for the Eagles with a team high .316 batting average, 17 RBI's and three homeruns.  Matt Lobacz has sparked an offensive surge in the middle of the batting order after returning to the starting lineup going 11 for 31(.355) with two homers, nine RBI's, six runs scored since his return.  Leighton Daniels continues to provide consistency in the leadoff spot as he extended his hitting streak to nine games on Wednesday.  During the streak, Daniels is 20 for 41 (.488) with seven RBI's and nine runs scored.  Chad Smith proceeds to clear up the bases with 12 RBI's in the last 11 games.
